Sold Out! On Point Paper Piecing Workshop with Amy Friend
Saturday, April 9, 2022 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
via Zoom $60.00 per attendee Class Description: Technique: Foundation Paper Piecing Level: Advanced Beginner/Intermediate (previous experience with foundation paper piecing) We will sew the Daisy Chain quilt from Amy's book, Petal + Stem. In this class, you will learn how to create two on-point paper-pieced blocks, a stylized flower and stem. You’ll learn both paper piecing skills and how to sew a curve to a paper pieced arc, which you can do with other blocks as well like the New York Beauty. Continue to sew your blocks at home and pop them into the on-point Daisy Chain layout, a modern layout with alternate gridwork and negative space. **Although you are required to purchase the book, as a bonus, Amy continues to provide more patterns to mix and match along with quilt layouts on her website! Some of these are free! Amy also hosts Petal + Stem block swaps that you can participate in for free.** Learn more about Amy Friend! Workshop Supplies General Supplies:
Fabric Requirements: (Note: depending on your comfort level, you may wish to purchase extra fabric. These requirements do not factor in extra for mistakes and assume that you will maximize your yardage.) If you tend to always be ahead of the class, you may wish to bring more fabric.
Optional Supplies: Glue Stick/Fabric Glue Pen Stiletto Smaller pins for curved piecing Seam Roller (if you prefer over pressing) Add a Quarter Ruler Materials Fee: Due to the publisher’s requirements and copyright issues, Petal and Stem is required for class and can be ordered directly from the instructor here. |
You must have the book to participate in the workshop. Purchase from Amy on Etsy or on Amazon.

PODS.
What is a Pod?
A pod is the S2MQG version of a sewing bee or cottage group gathering. It is a gathering of quilters hosted by one of our members at their designated location. You typically bring your own sewing machine and equipment and have an open sew time. It gives those attending the opportunity to socialize, sew on a project of their choice, and maybe get input while enjoying fellowship with other quilters of the guild.
Where and When are the Pods held?
They are held at the host designated location (home, shop, etc.) at a time convenient for the host and usually once a month. You should contact the Pod host directly if you would like to attend to be sure there are enough spots open.
S2MQG had 6 pods pre-COVID, and we are beginning to reestablish our pods into 2022.
NEW! Outdoor Venice Pod - The Outdoor Venice Pod will meet the 4th Friday of each month in Centennial Park (shady area near the flagpole), in Venice. Set your GPS to 200 E Venice Ave, Venice, FL 34285. There are public restrooms and plenty of parking. Please bring a chair, show and tell, and a portable project. No formal agenda, just chatting and quilting. For now we will cap the group at 8 people each month. We will practice social distancing.
EQ8 Royalty - This pod is focused solely on designing quilts using Electric Quilt 8, and the software must be installed on the laptop that you bring to the session. Nicole is our leader, and the group is nearly full. Contact Nicole Buckley ([email protected]) for more information about the next meeting location, date and time and to RSVP if there are available spots.
Lilly Pod
The Pod Squad - at the Modern Sewist has been shelved with the fabric bolts due to low interest/attendance (a/k/a canceled).
Mod Pod – The host is Katie Metheny and is full at this time, until further notice.
Jacaranda Library Pod -
How do I become a host?
Everyone in the S2MQG is welcome to host a Pod! Please contact contact Carla Williams (Pod Committee Chair) if you are interested so we can add you to our list to let the membership know!

- When Queen Bee you will create an email to your fellow mates by the 25th of the month BEFORE your assigned month. You need to identify which bee block from the MQG website you want created. In the email please provide link to the block and the colors you want placed in each block. It is also helpful to create a block and attach photo of it for your bee mates. https://community.themodernquiltguild.com/resources/field_types/block-studies-367
- Communicate your color range choices by doing a pull of fabric and photographing it. Place that photo in your email.
- Complete block by the meeting. Example, if I am the Queen for September I should notify all bee mates by August 25th what block and colors I would like. Then my bee mates will need to bring to the October meeting my completed block OR mail by last date in September.
- Communicate, communicate, communicate with your bee mates. You might make a friend or two for life.
2020 Quilt Con Charity Quilt
The 2020 design theme was text. Quilts incorporating text have been popular in the modern quilt movement right from the start. Krista Hennebury’s quilt, “Fly Blackbird Fly” (pieced with Denyse Schmitt’s letters) won a prize at QuiltCon 2012. Most recently, at QuiltCon 2019, there were a number of quilts exhibited using words. There was the powerful, “Where are all the black women?” quilt by Jessica Wohl. Berene Campbell’s colorful quilts “Brave Brilliant Beautiful Badass” was eye catching as you turned the corner. Bill Stearman exhibited a moving quilt that read “We were wrong. We are sorry. And we will never let this happen again.” And, of course, Chawne Kimber can always be counted on to have a recent text quilt. One of her recent quilts “not showing proper deference to wypipo”, also hung at QuiltCon.
There are many alphabet patterns available or you could work improvisationally. Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill released a set of EPP letters called Typecast at QuiltCon. Jen Carlton-Bailly has designed a set of letters using curved piecing called Curfont. Stitch Your Story, a new release by Sarah Fielke, includes 6 alphabets. There are no restrictions on technique.
Each quilt should include at least one word and it should be a central design element in the composition. Of course, you can use text fabrics too!

QuiltCon requires a very specific color palette. The only colors authorized are those below. We can use prints, but they must exclusively use these colors (e,g., the tangerine with a white print).
Note: For consistency within the S2MQG quilt, please use WHITE in the geese triangles. All other segments can be the other colors in the palette, but we need those migrating geese to be WHITE. See examples in the slideshow/presentation for examples.
