Anniversary Quilt
South Sarasota Modern Quilt Guild celebrated its 5th Anniversary in 2023. To commemorate our achievement, members used the color palette of our logo (blues/aquas/greens) to make 6.5” or 12.5" square quilt blocks that would then be pieced together into a quilt. Our theme was 5 – FIVE! Blocks could be the number 5, a Roman numeral 5 (V), a five-pointed star, 5 stripes...any way to represent 5.
In February of 2018, Jennifer Engleman and Karis Hess invited quilters to attend a meeting to discuss starting another chapter of the MQG. About 30 people attended and the name of the guild, board members and by laws were discussed. It was not long before the paperwork was filed. In April 2018 S2MQG was accepted by MQG as an official local guild.
QuiltCon is such a staple of the Modern Quilting Community. Throughout the Anniversary quilt you will spot blocks from each of the submitted QuiltCon’s Community Outreach Quilt Challenge quilts we participated in.

In 2019, we submitted our first quilt to QuiltCon’s Community Outreach Quilt Challenge. The theme was Tiny Piecing! Debra Jalbert, a friend of Jenni’s, presented a workshop demonstrating how to construct blocks with tiny pieces. Members applied their knowledge to construct star blocks and other blocks with tiny pieces.
QuiltCon’s 2020 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge theme was Text! We titled our quilt New Attitude. Members were asked to create blocks with only positive messages in any size and using any method with the given color palette. Some members created messages in many different languages, Spanish, French, German, Hebrew and Chinese, including braille. With an overwhelming response in creating blocks, we had extras! The remaining blocks were pieced to create a unique message on the back of the quilt. The message reads “I wonder; vote peace & justice for all; I amor; I act; I laugh!!”
In 2021, it was all about curved piecing as the theme. The color palette included white, three shades of blue and two shades of orange. We set parameters for our blocks to have NO MORE than 3 colors from the palette and one color had to be orange reflecting the beautiful sunsets and sunrises captured in the beauty SW Florida. Members contributed 12.5” or 6.5” blocks utilizing curves!!
QuiltCon was again happening in person after suffering through the effects of COVID. The theme for 2022 was "Angles but NOT 90°!!! with a citrus-inspired color palette. Migration was an original creation, designed in EQ8. Foundation paper piece blocks were designed with white flying geese shapes within and joined to build the migration pattern.
2023 Community Outreach Quilt Challenge theme was “Color Shift”. The colors were perfect for our Florida Waters. Using all the colors in the color palette, members made a 1” square in a 5.5” square.
Get To the Point was a collaborative effort by members for 2024 Challenge. The colors were described as a “calming palette”. Our inspiration to reflect the year’s theme, Symmetry, was to construct triangular foundation paper pieced blocks into a symmetric arrangement.
In celebration of our anniversary, we made a quilt, bringing together the collective efforts of our members. Working as a team, each person contributed their unique skills and creativity, transforming individual pieces into a cohesive masterpiece. This project not only showcased our collaborative spirit but also strengthened the bonds within our community. By working side by side, we were able to share ideas, inspire one another, and create lasting memories. The quilt stands as a symbol of unity, reflecting the harmony and dedication of everyone involved.
Thanks to Mary Hayes for writing this piece and for being the catalyst for incorporating the prior Quilt Con quilts into the Anniversary quilt..
